Ultraviolet Systems

UV systems are a disinfection process used to affect microorganisms without adding any chemicals or oxidants to the water. Ultraviolet lamps housed in a glass tube-like cover deliver a dosed dose of UV light to the inlet water of the device. These ultraviolet lights inactivate microorganisms by disrupting their DNA structure. This results in an average disinfection efficiency of 99.9%.

For this system to kill microorganisms, the ultraviolet light must directly strike them. Therefore, the water must be cleared of sediment and turbidity before entering the ultraviolet system. The use of a sand filter or cartridge filter is recommended before using ultraviolet systems.
Another important consideration with ultraviolet systems is to use the system as close as possible to the end-use area. Furthermore, water exiting the system should not enter a separate unit, especially one open to the atmosphere, and should be used without delay. Periodic maintenance is essential for optimal performance of ultraviolet units. The UV lamp should be replaced annually, and the quartz glass should be cleaned periodically, depending on the raw water quality. Failure to do so will reduce the effectiveness of the UV light and reduce equipment efficiency.
